The Flood
I don't follow the news much at all while on trail, but I have learned the the southeast United States is experiencing catastrophic flooding at the moment.
So much infrastructure is gone that it's hard to get a full view of the scope of the destruction. I know that many of the towns and areas that we walked through in Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia are now flooded, damaged, or destroyed. Entire regions are cut off from road traffic and only accessible by air. Cities are without power or phone service.
There is a lot to say about this. The Appalachian Trail through the area will probably be impassible for months or even years, but before anybody can even worry about that, a whole lot of people are going to need to figure out how to get food, water, and evacuation.
I'm just beginning to wrap my head around this emerging disaster. Help if you can. I'm still in Pennsylvania and safe. Not sure what I'll find when I get to southern Virginia in a week and a half.
